Simple But Not Easy

Everybody wants to have their own business. They work hardly just to fulfill their dream by setting up a small business.

To set up a small business is actually easy. You just follow the rules and procedures from the local authority, then set up your business with your budget. It could be from RM1,000 to RM200,000.

For those who are first time own the business, most of the time they will just spending most of their money in setting up. Especially the retail business.

We have a statement in Chinese 创业容易,守业难 means setting up a business is easy but to manage a business is not easy.

One of the most challenges part is Human Resources / man power. I would say one person (lone ranger) can act fast and make decision fast with no issue. Discussion still can be done by two persons.
When comes to 3 persons, most of the issues or problems would be the same with 300 or 3000 persons.

To hire a good staff is not easy, to train a good staff even not easy too.
What about to keep your good staff?
Good staff is your biggest assets in your business. Without a good management skill to keep your good staff, you will be closing shop even you have a good business.

Here is an example, there is a teh tarik store near to my office. The owner started with her own and daughter. Everyday, they start their business on 2pm. They make simple local coffee ice that the local called kopi peng and other drinks. They sell nasi lemak, fried bee hoon, fried noddle, kuih muih (local cake) which are all provided by the homemaker, form there they just earn RM0.10 or RM0.20 per pack or per kuih.
Everyday, they can sell off 300 packs of nasi lemak, 100 packs of fried bee hoon, few boxes of kuih muih with the drinks and local deserts (bubur kacang) that they prepared.

The set up is very simple, they park a used mini van beside the road, putting on few tables under the big tree. People walking along the street come and go, consume their food and drinks there or take away back to office.
I would say no rental, no utility bills. Maybe once a blue moon the local authority will come to warn and give summon for illegal roadside business.
After a while, their business growing, they started to sell more food. They start early from 2pm to 12pm. Business is getting better and better. They have 2 workers to run the business and the lady (owner) just sitting there to collect money.

One day, I noticed that the store were closed for more than 1 week and I saw there is a notice on the mini van. I walked closely and take a look...
Opps... "Closed due to short of man power"
I am not sure what is the a real reason, but I know that recently the local authority came out for illegal foreign workers. Many foreign workers just disappear and hide up in somewhere.

If you are thinking to starting up this kind of business, think twice.
Yes, it is easy to start up, but not easy to maintain. You must have a proper positioning on your business and proper planning. Beside man power issue, actually there are still many areas need to study. Cash flow, stock control, servicing, marketing, productions, preparation, building relationship with customers....

Asking Good Questions

In fact I wanna take a quick and simple 5.95 value meal lunch at McD.

When I reach the counter the staff ask, "Sir, would you like to try out this new burger?"

She continue, "The new taste burger with our new special drink..."

Emm... While my mind still loading....
The staff keep asking, "Would you like to take beef or chicken...?"

"Ok, chicken please..."

"12.20 please and thank you sir.."
Look at this short moment, by asking good questions the staff manage to increase the sale volume for at least 100% in a single transaction...!
Do you train your staff to ask good questions?

RM100 vs RM100

Look at the RM100 note, if you keep the old version RM100 under your pillow for the past 20 years, the old version RM100 remaining RM100. It might have a little bit collection value but i think it depreciate much for the past 20 years.

If 20 years ago, you save the old version RM100 in the bank savings account. Today the value of your RM100 might grow to RM149 (with 2% yearly compounded interest)
This is only talking about 2% yearly compounding interest.
What about if we manage to get averagely 9% or more annual return from other investment products for over 20 years...?

Think about it... Plan your money wisely where should you keep and make sure your money is growing at least 6% every year, but not 2% or 3%.

Paya Terubong Fruits Stall 龙尾山庄水果摊

Visiting my client who is a fruits stall owner, they always busy during durian season...
During this short visit to them, we only talk about durians, durians & durians...
I didn't talk about my products or services, I am building relationship with my client all the time...

Sweetie Mango & local durians
